Children

During infancy, it is now believed that tooth decay can begin as early as the age of 10 months. So it's important to begin good dental hygiene as soon as possible. According to most authorities on dental care, formal dental visits should begin by the child’s first birthday.

Your Child's First Dental Visit

On this visit your Dentist will count your child's teeth, check for signs of decay and, examine the child’s bite, or occlusion. A tooth cleaning may also be performed. Often the doctor will give advice on daily hygiene for the child’s teeth or the use of fluoride treatments.

To ensure that the first visit goes as smoothly as possible, tell your child in calm, simple terms what will take place. If you are anxious about dental visits, don’t show your fears to the child. Likewise, never allow others to tell your child scary stories about visiting the dentist. Try to avoid words like "shot, needle, pain, or drill", etc.
