TM D: Temporomandibular Disorders
What is TMD?
An impaired
or altered functioning of the jaw joints
and the muscles used to control chewing, yawning, speaking and
swallowing.
Why Should it be Treated?
To relieve you from the pain and
tenderness in the jaw joints or chewing muscles as well reducing the
"popping"
or "clicking" noise
that occurs when you open you mouth, chew or yawn.
How
is it treated?
By learning how to relax, avoid clenching, straining,
grinding of your jaw or opening your mouth too wide. We will
teach you how to exercise and massage your muscles gently, apply a warm
compress, eat a softer diet, or how to use occasional occlusal splints
to gain relief. Though available, surgery is rarely performed.
